Studienprofil

The Master's degree programme Information Management explores selected areas of the Bachelor's degree programme in greater depth and offers additional opportunities for individual specialisation. Students reinforce their business expertise within the focus area Business Administration, and expand their knowledge in one of the specialisations from the fields of Informatics, Information Systems, and Information Management. In doing so, special emphasis is placed on coupling business administration expertise and information technology know-how. The degree programme aims to convey the knowledge required in order to manage computerized information systems in businesses and inter-company networks, both in terms of business administration and in terms of information technology. A compulsory practical placement and lecturers from the industry rond off the practice-oriented profile of the degree programme.

The degree programme comprises elements from the field of Informatics and from Business Administration.

If desired and following consultation with the competent supervisor, the Master thesis can be written in English.

Studienziel

Students completing the Master's degree programme Information Management learn how to develop information technology solutions from the business administration perspective, and to apply these in the practical setting. They are well-equipped to

  • design, introduce, support, and develop information systems and networks that are typical for e-Business, working beyond corporate borders if necessary.
  • operate the interface management between business application and system technology from the specification analysis, to the functional specification document, and finally to the system design, and consequently provide project-based support for development processes.
  • accept the responsibility for the entire internal information system in small and medium-sized companies, including the necessary Informatics solutions.
  • independently develop and manage small-scale software applications for businesses.
  • utilize their acquired theoretical and methodological expertise to conduct independent research in the scientific sphere.
Berufsfeld

Graduates occupy leadership positions in the middle and upper management levels of private and public companies, as well as non-profit organisations. The participation in university and non-university research institutions also represents a possible field of professional activity.

The employment spectrum of our graduates is very broad and covers the following areas, amongst others:

Auslandsstudien

During the Master of Information Management degree programme, emphasis is placed on promoting the mobility of the students. Through intercultural exchange and the acquisition of language skills, graduates are prepared in the best possible way for careers in a globalised economy. It is therefore recommended that one semester is spent at an international university. This usually occurs during the second or third semester of the Master's degree programme. Existing offers (such as existing double degree agreements in the field of information management) should ideally be used for this.

Erasmus+ and Joint Study programs allow students to study at numerous partner universities in Europe and across the globe.

Praktika

During the course of the Master's degree programme, students can complete a relevant practical placement or a practical project, with a minimum duration of 10 weeks and worth a total of 15 ECTS credits, in order to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in a practical setting. The placement must deal with application issues relating to Information Management and can be carried out in domestic or foreign companies, in public administration bodies or in non-profit organisations, or in non-university research institutions. Students are encouraged to schedule the internship during the second or third semester of the Master's degree programme. The placement cannot take place during the final registered semester. The internship must be approved by a competent supervising university lecturer. Upon completion, but certainly no later than the second subsequent semester, students must attend a seminar worth 1 ECTS credit, in which the experiences gained are processed and presented in an oral presentation and a written report. Please refer to the curriculum § 11 for further information relating to the placement.

Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft sind in zunehmendem Maß durch den Einsatz digitaler Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien geprägt. Damit haben die heutigen Unternehmen einen steigenden Bedarf an Mitarbeitern und Mitarbeiterinnen, die im Bereich solcher Technologien Fachleute sind. 

Das Masterstudium Informationsmanagement vertieft ausgewählte Inhalte des Bachelorstudiums und bietet zusätzliche Möglichkeiten zur individuellen Spezialisierung. Studierende vertiefen ihr wirtschaftliches Fachwissen innerhalb des Schwerpunktbereiches der Betriebswirtschaftslehre und erweitern ihre Kenntnisse in einer Vertiefung der Bereiche Informatik, Informationssysteme und des Informationsmanagements. Hierbei wird besonderes Augenmerk auf die Verknüpfung von betriebswirtschaftlichem Fachwissen und informationstechnischem Know-how gelegt. Das Studium zielt darauf ab, das nötige Wissen zu vermitteln, um EDV-gestützte Informationssysteme im Unternehmen und in zwischenbetrieblichen Netzwerken sowohl aus betriebswirtschaftlicher als auch informationstechnischer Perspektive zu managen. Ein verpflichtendes Praxissemester als auch Vortragende aus der Wirtschaft runden das praxisorienterte Profil des Studiums ab.

Besonderheiten
  • Das Studium setzt sich aus Inhalten der Informatik sowie der Betriebswirtschaftslehre zusammen.
  • Die Masterarbeit kann auf Wunsch und nach Absprache mit dem zuständigen Betreuer/der Betreuerin auch auf Englisch verfasst werden.
  • Die Verbindung zwischen wirtschaftlichem und informationstechnischem Know-how ist in Unternehmen sehr gefragt.
  • Studierende lernen wichtige Management-Skills, um später Führungsaufgaben übernehmen zu können. Ihr mögliches berufliches Einsatzgebiet ist sehr breit. 
  • Am Campus in Klagenfurt gibt es sehr gute Betreuungsverhältnisse, kleine Seminare und überschaubare Arbeitsgruppen. Hier finden Studierende schnell Freundschaften und Anschluss!

Studienziel

Studierende des Masterstudiums Informationsmanagement erlernen, informationstechnische Lösungen aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Perspektive zu entwickeln und in der Praxis anzuwenden. Sie sind in der Lage

  • im E-Business übliche Informationssysteme und Netzwerke auch unternehmensübergreifend zu entwickeln, einzuführen, zu betreuen und weiterzuentwickeln.
  • das Schnittstellenmanagement zwischen betriebswirtschaftlicher Anwendung und der Systemtechnik von der Anforderungsanalyse über das Pflichtenheft bis zur Systemgestaltung zu betreiben und in diesem Sinne Entwicklungsprozesse projektmäßig zu begleiten.
  • die Verantwortung für das gesamte interne Informationssystem in Klein- und Mittelbetrieben inklusive der dafür notwendigen Informatiklösungen zu übernehmen.
  • kleinere betriebliche Softwareapplikationen eigenständig zu entwickeln und zu verwalten.
  • ihre erworbenen theoretischen und methodischen Kenntnisse zur selbstständigen Forschung im wissenschaftlichen Bereich zu nutzen.
Berufsfeld

Die Berufsmöglichkeiten liegen in Führungsaufgaben im mittleren und oberen Management privat-wirtschaftlicher Unternehmen und Organisationen, gemeinwirtschaftlicher Organisationen und öffentlicher Unternehmen und Verwaltungen sowie als MitarbeiterIn universitärer und außeruniversitärer Forschungseinrichtungen. Das Einsatzspektrum der Absolventinnen und Absolventen des Studiums Informationsmanagements ist - wie generell bei wirtschafts-nahen Studien – sehr breit gestreut. Die Arbeitsbereiche erstrecken sich von der IT-Dienstleistung und Softwareherstellung bis hin zur Produktion und dem Verkauf in verschiedenen Branchen oder in der öffentlichen Verwaltung.

Auslandsstudien

Im Rahmen des Masterstudiums Informationsmanagement wird gezielt die Mobilität von Studierenden gefördert. Durch den interkulturellen Austausch sowie durch den Erwerb von Sprachkenntnissen werden Absolventinnen und Absolventen bestmöglich auf Karrieren in einer globalisierten Wirtschaft vorbereitet. Es wird daher empfohlen, ein Semester an einer ausländischen Universität zu absolvieren, möglichst das zweite oder das dritte Semester des Masterstudiums. Vorzugsweise sollten dafür bestehende Angebote (wie z.B. existierende Double-Degree Abkommen im Bereich Informationsmanagement) genutzt werden.

Praktika

Im Laufe des Masterstudiums können Studierende eine facheinschlägige Praxis bzw. ein Praxisprojekt im Ausmaß von zumindest 10 Wochen und im Umfang von 15 ECTS-AP zur praxisorientierten Anwendung der erworbenen Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten absolvieren. Die Praxis muss sich mit Anwendungsfragen des Informationsmanagements beschäftigen und kann in in- und ausländischen Betrieben, öffentlichen Verwaltungen bzw. Non-Profit-Organisationen oder Forschungsinstitutionen absolviert werden.
