The Bachelor's degree programme Information Management establishes an interdisciplinary link between Business Administration contents and contents from the field of Informatics. It aims to impart the necessary tools to effectively manage modern computerized information and communication systems in businesses. The degree programme is comprised in four equal parts of economic subjects, principles of Informatics and software development (e.g. IT management, e-Business, and information systems), and supplementary subjects such as Mathematics, Statistics, or Business Law, or English communication and language skills. Practical experiences are contributed by lecturers with direct links to the industry, and are also acquired by working on projects. The degree programme offers students the opportunity to specialise either in the area of Business Administration or in the area of Information Management and operational information systems.

The degree programme comprises elements from the field of Informatics and from Business Administration. The restricted electives offer students specialisations in the areas of Law, Business Administration, Mathematics, as well as Economics, Gender, English as business and technology language, Sociology and Technology Assessment.

If desired and following consultation with the competent supervisor, the Bachelor thesis can be written in English.

Students completing the Bachelor's degree programme Information Management ensure the smooth interaction between the system technology and the areas of application in the context of the use of business management information systems.

They are well-equipped to

• accept the responsibility for the entire internal information system including the necessary Informatics solutions in small and medium-sized companies.
• design, introduce, maintain, and develop corporate information systems.
• adapt deployed systems to the economic and technical framework conditions and consequently to provide project-based support for development processes.
• independently develop small-scale software applications for businesses.

Graduates typically find their primary field of responsibilities in the design, construction, maintenance and development of computerised information systems in businesses and inter-company networks, with the aim to manage them effectively, both in terms of business administration and in terms of information technology.

Due to the significant business administration component of the degree program, graduates are ideally qualified for professional activities in a variety of fields, including

• the production and development of information technology systems.
• IT service provision and software production.
• the selling and marketing of information technology systems.
• in the public sector, for instance in the maintenance and monitoring of deployed systems.

Students are strongly encouraged to complete a period of study abroad within the framework of the Alpen-Adria-Universität partnership agreements.

Master's degree programme Information Management

The introductory orientation phase grants students an overview of the key elements of the degree programme and of the course of studies ahead. Thus, it provides a factual basis for the personal evaluation of the choice of degree programme. As students must successfully complete the introductory orientation phase in order to continue their studies, it is recommended that the introductory orientation phase should be scheduled during the first semester. The introductory orientation phase for the Bachelor's degree programme Information Management consists of the two courses "Introduction to Business Administration" and "Introduction to Informatics", worth 4 and 2 ECTS credits, respectively.

The Bachelor's degree programme Information Management does not include a compulsory placement. However, students can voluntarily complete a self-organised placement within the scope of the free electives. The Programme Director considers and confirms the recognition of the placement, and must be consulted before the placement can commence. The practical relevance of the Bachelor's degree programme is established through courses taught by lecturers with close links to the industry, and through the implementation of practical projects.
