Language of the course

The language in this course is English. Participants should have a sufficient  mastery of English: they should be able to understand and speak everyday English and be able to express their thoughts and ideas.  Most important in the communication during the course is the understanding of each other; not a perfect pronunciation or a perfect use of grammar. In the course we  will support each other in expressing our ideas, which is an important aspect of diversity competence.  So this course is a good opportunity to overcome one's possible anxiety to communicate in English and it is a save and supporting opportunity to practice and develop one's mastery of the English.

Methods of teaching

Inputs, literature of central texts, analysis of international case studies, research of materials, research and performing a presentation of a self-chosen diversity competence-issue, individual and group assignments: reflection, discussion; roleplays, simulation games, learning diaries.

Inhalt/e

Short description of the content of the course

Diversity competence is a crucial part of global citizenship. It empowers to relate to people from different nationalities, ethnicities and religions in a respectful way and to live, study and work in an international context. These days, people are in permanent contact with (cultural) differences, with ‚strangeness ‘, with the unknown. Therefore, it is important that people can get along as global citizens in a superdiverse world.

In this course different concepts of intercultural competence, diversity competence, intercultural communication and (super)diversity are introduced and discussed, as well as own international experiences from the practice will be reflected.

Fundamental questions will be discussed like: What assumptions and paradigms are underlying the concepts of culture, interculturality, (super-)diversity, inclusion, globalisation, and ethics and power in a globalised world? What is the aim and content of diversity competence? How to develop diversity competence?
