Course content
Intended learning outcomes
- Students should be able to critically discuss minority concepts in Europe and in several European countries;
- Students know about the situation of single language minorities in Europe;
- Students can critically discuss the linguistic diversity in Europe and the challenges it poses.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Course content
From 20th to 28th June 2020 the Europeada - European Football Championship of autochthonous national minorities will take place in southern Carinthia. What was created as a tourist gag has now become a major event organized by the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN). The major aim of FUEN is “to preserve and promote the identity, language, culture, rights and unique characteristics of the European minorities” (https://www.europeada.eu/europeada/detail/ueber-die-europeada/en). How can one define and describe an autochthonous linguistic or national minority? The Sorbs (D), the Occitans (E/F/I), the Slovenes of Italy (I), the Grisons (CH) and others will take part in the Europeada in Carinthia. What is the status of these minorities in their countries? To what extent are they recognized, protected and promoted? What are the common denominators? These and other questions will be answered in the course.
