Inhalt/e

The Cold War has, even a quarter-century after its completion, an omnipresence in media, history and film. The rivalry between the two superpowers, American and the Soviet Union, took place for over forty years, thus the Cold War can be divided into three periods:

  • The Early Cold War, which took place from 1947 until the early 1960s
  • The Amicable State of Détente (1960-1979)
  • The Last Days of the Cold War, taking place from 1980 to 1989/91

Beginning with the Détente, Berlin became not only the metropolis for Cold War politics, but also for the depiction of the Cold War on the big screen. From the mid-1960s, a number of American and British films were shot in the ‘divided city’, all of them belonging to the espionage genre, such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Martin Ritt, 1966), based on John le Carré’s eponymous novel from 1963, Funeral in Berlin (Guy Hamilton, 1966) and The Quiller Memorandum (Michael Anderson, 1966). Berlin as a shooting location for espionage films has been popular since the 1960s and this fascination did not stop after the end of the Cold War.

We are going to talk in this course about the Cold War and its portrayal in media, in particular in films. Moreover, an excursion to Berlin will take place from June 7th to the 13th where we will explore Berlin’s history and sights which were often shown in films during the Cold War.
