They will also gain a better understanding of the social and political difficulties and complexities this ethnic community has been facing in the United States. They will also broaden their knowledge as to why themes like identity, borderlands, assimilation, hybridity and resistance are such essential themes in Chicanx literature and culture.

Short lecture inputs, close analysis and discussion of assigned texts

Course content

Chicanx/a/o or more commonly known as Mexican-American literature offers insight into a unique and often neglected perspective on the American experience. In this proseminar, we will explore the rich diversity of Chicanx literature and other forms of storytelling, focusing on issues of ethnicity, hybridity, gender, and spirituality. We will approach the narratives of this ethnic group through a number of contemporary novels, short stories, poetry, and film. We will start out with Gloria Anzaldúa’s influential “To Live in the Borderlands Means You”, asking ourselves how members of the Chicanx community use storytelling to express their voices and their sense of place. Connecting past and present, we will then discuss selected short stories that showcase deep rooted spirituality as well as the constraints of Chicanx femininity. Putting an emphasis on the complexity of the Chicanx/Latinx family, we will also watch Pixar’s Coco (2017). Ana Castillo’s So Far From God foregrounds the storytelling device Magical Realism and we will explore how it relates to both Chicanx and Latinx cultures. Finally, Mario Alberto Zambrano’s Lotería tells the story of a young Mexican-American girl whose life is falling apart. In each of these narratives, we will discuss how Chicanx life is represented and what kind of insights into American culture and history they can provide.
