Inhalt/e

The key issue of value-based management is to prioritize those decisions which contribute to firm value. Besides a certain managerial mind-set value-based management also comprises various metrics (like economic value added®) and instruments directed to measure and deliberately affect firm value. The course provides an introduction to value-based management including value-based metrics and value-based management compensation. In the course, the key features of value-based management are analysed and its consequences are discussed.

  • Idea and background of value-based management
  • Basic principles of valuation, esp. net Present Value and discounted cash flow
  • Principles of residual income-based metrics
  • Examples of residual income-based metrics (economic value added, cash flow return on investment)
  • Value-based management compensation
  • Critical assessment of value-based management
  • Shareholder value vs. stakeholder value

Students may choose between the written examination or, alternatively, a position paper dealing with the same topic as the student’s oral presentation.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Oral presentation and written examination (paper-based or electronic, depending on the number of examinees).

Prüfungsinhalt/e

The oral presentation (30 minutes) is intended to give an overview about the selected topic.

The contents of the lecture will be examined in the written examination (30 minutes).

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Attendance of at least 75%.

For the presentation:

  • correctness and clarity (i.e., are the key ideas of the research paper correctly and concisely captured and presented).

For the examination:

  • 15 out of 30 points have to be reached to get a positive grade.

The grades for presentation and examination are weighted by 50%.
