LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will be familiar with recent developments in English-language Canadian drama. They will know key authors and plays, be able to identify core themes and issues, and discuss relevant texts on a content- as well as a formal level in a competent manner.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Compact lecture inputs for context. Preparatory home readings of texts and performed readings of selected scenes in class. Plenary discussion of texts. Concise, individual spotlight essays. Seminar paper.

There will also be a skype talk-back with Drew Hayden Talor, the author of one of our plays, in January. This is a rare opportunity to directly discuss a play with its creator!

Inhalt/e

During the last three decades, drama in English-speaking Canada has seen an explosive creative dispersal of voices from centre to periphery, resulting in hitherto unknown diversity. This seminar will first provide students with a framework to make sense of these changes, before embarking on an in-depth exploration of selected example texts.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Knowledge of Canadian culture and history is certainly helpful. Familiarity with key themes of and critical perspectives in Canadian literature even more so. Basic knowledge of French is a plus but not required.

Literatur

Students are required to acquire (in print or digital) and read the following plays for class (they will be discussed in this order):

Fraser, Brad. 1989 (2006). Love and Human Remains. [Please get the 2006 re-worked edition, not the 1989 original!]

Gale, Loreena. 2001. Je Me Souviens.

Atwood, Margaret. 2007. The Penelodiad - The Play. [Please take great care to get the PLAY and not the earlier prose version!]

Kerr, Kevin. 2010. Skydive.

Yee, David. 2010. Lady in the Red Dress.

Taylor, Drew Hayden. 2019. Cottagers and Indians.
