Inhalt/e
This course examines the history and diverse experiences of Americans of Asian descent in the United States with a focus on the twentieth century. We will turn to texts from the decades prior to the advent of Asian American Studies as an academic field in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and to more recent literature and film. Scrutinizing works in their specific historical contexts, employing insights from narrative, feminist, and critical race theory, and addressing central themes of Asian American Studies such as immigration, mixed heritage, racial stereotypes, multiculturalism, and diaspora, will enhance our readings of novels, short fiction, autobiographical and journalistic writing, poetry, stand-up comedy, and film. The seminar focuses on key texts like Bulosan’s America is in the Heart (1943), Okada’s No-No Boy (1957), Kingston’s The Woman Warrior (1976), the 1993 film The Joy Luck Club, and the 2005 documentary What’s Wrong with Frank Chin, to give a sense of the diversity that lies under the (contested) umbrella term “Asian American” and to highlight Asian America’s contributions to U.S. history, culture, and society.
