Short input lectures; in-class exploration of primary texts through close textual analysis; in-class and group discussion; short oral presentations by students.

Inhalt/e

This course explores the “storyworlds” of Edgar Allan Poe in a twofold sense. On the one hand, we will examine the multifaceted worlds of Poe’s works through a wide range of primary texts including short fiction, poetry, essays, magazine articles, and Poe’s only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), paying close attention to structure, style, narrative technique, character conceptualization, and imagery. On the other hand, we will simultaneously think about the ways in which Poe and his writing have populated, interacted with, and “storied” the world of his time and beyond. In this respect, the seminar addresses a variety of questions, such as: How did Poe respond to discourses of his age and to questions of slavery, race, class, and gender? Which audiences did he (attempt to) reach and how did he negotiate the antebellum literary marketplace? How does Poe relate to the literary period traditionally called the “American Renaissance” and how did he inaugurate and contribute to various genres such as the detective story, the gothic horror tale, or the newspaper hoax? Moreover, how did his work influence discourses, movements, and (popular) culture through time and across media up until today, from Symbolism, Modernism, and psychoanalysis, to music, visual art, theater, film, and The Simpsons? Addressing such questions through our close readings of Poe’s texts will help make sense of one of the most versatile and influential writers of the U.S. American canon in his time and to the present day.
