LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will learn to differentiate between different subgenres of speculative fiction, more precicely the classical utopia, the dystopia, and the post-apocalypse. They will gain insight into the possibilities as well as limitation of these potential futures and how these utopian thoughts relate to the history and culture of U.S. America.

Inhalt/e
After arriving in America in 1620 and 1630 respectively, the Pilgrims established Plymouth and the Puritans founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony to make the “New World” inhabitable. One of their aims was to build a “better place” than the one they knew. In this proseminar, we will concern ourselves with such utopian ideas in American fiction and what they have looked like. We begin with Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland (1915) which depicts an isolated society composed entirely of women. Then, we move to utopia gone wrong, the dystopia, with Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 (1953) which depicts a future American society where books are outlawed and “firemen” burn every single one they find. Afterwards, we investigate Fernando A. Flores’ Tears of the Trufflepig (2019), a dystopia that depicts an American near future in which disease is common, crime syndicates control most food production and the American government prepares to build a third border-wall between the US and Mexico. Finally, we will turn our attention to Kim Stanley Robinson’s post-apocalyptical The Wild Shore (1984). Through these texts, we will investigate how they relate to American culture, foregrounding how these societies are made up and how they aim to evoke hope to move towards a better future.
