Inhalt/e
In this course, we will be concerned with passing literature of the Harlem Renaissance. Defined as “the period when the Negro was in vogue” by Langston Hughes, the Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920s and 1930s produced an unprecedented number of literary works by African Americans. In order to understand the social, historical, and political context that surrounded the renaissance, we will take a closer look at a wide range of texts, such as poems, essays, and novels. We will pay particular attention to three short novels that explore the phenomenon of racial passing by presenting characters who are legally defined as black, but light enough to pass for white: Nella Larsen’s Passing (1928), George Schuyler’s Black No More (1931), and Jessie Redmon Fauset’s Plum Bun: A Novel Without a Moral (1928). We will analyze the different ways in which these authors explore the race and gender relations of early twentieth-century America in their fictional worlds. At the end of the semester, students will be familiar with the dynamics that shaped the Harlem Renaissance and its contributions to African American literary and cultural history.
