Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- critically analyse a paragraph in terms of its structure and style
- write a formal academic paragraph implementing the structure and style taught in class
- cite and reference sources appropriately
- actively and accurately use a range of academic vocabulary in their own writing
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Online tasks, extensive self-study, written assignments in class and written homework assignments.
Students are required to regularly read academic papers in English and discuss them in class in order to develop their academic reading skills and awareness of academic vocabulary and register.
Course content
This course is a foundation course in academic writing and covers the following:
- paragraph structure
- scholarly practice: understanding and avoiding plagiarism
- features of formal academic writing (including vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)
- introduction to academic reading strategies and skills
- citing and referencing (paraphrasing and summarising)
- stages of the writing process (planning, writing and editing)
IMPORTANT: due to the ongoing global pandemic, the structure of this course has been adapted as best as possible to meet students’ needs whilst also complying with the requirements set out by the University. In order to keep students and staff safe, students on this course will be divided into two groups. The attendance of each group in class will alternate on a weekly basis; this is in order to limit the number of students present at any one time. All sessions taking place at the University will be live streamed on Moodle. It is mandatory that students attend class at the University and/or online.
