Intendierte Lernergebnisse
The students will.be able to identify and interpret current political and social developments and their immediate or long term effect on minorities in Austria, be they autochthonous groups such as Slovene-, Croatian-, Hungarian-speakers or speakers of Czech, Slovak, different Romani dialects and other significant minority groups. The emphasis will be on the interrelation between such factors as language, religious affiliation and social status, as well as on the possibility of using these different sociological markers for political mobilisation.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
The course will present first a short overview of the historical background of Austrian minority politics. After this initial stage central documents will be presented, studied and discussed with the students, analysing their impact on central topics of the course.
This course will/can be held in German and/or English. Students should have a good command of English - meaning that they can understand everyday English spoken at a normal speed. They should be able to express their thoughts and ideas.
The Course will be interactive in the sense that
a) I will engage in open dialogue with the students, discussing input,
b) students will have to analyse documents and prepare German/English texts and present them (we will discuss how to present at the beginning of the course),
c) in the sense that the students will work together in pairs or groups (in this pair- or groupwork any language is allowed as long as all participants can take part; summaries for presentation to all have to be in German/English).
Inhalt/e
The course will present first a short overview of the historical background of Austrian minority politics from the second half of the 19th century to the end of the Second World War. In a second unit the major stages of Austrian minority politics and policy – from the side of public authorities as well as from the side of minority institutions – will be presented within a theoretical model.
After these initial stages central documents will be presented, studied and discussed with the students, analysing their impact on central topics like official use of language, bilingual/ monolingual education in the mother tongue, cultural organisations, political representation, etc
In a further step these discussions will then examined with the help of theoretical models from the social sciences about ethnicity, ethnic identity, invented tradition, etc.:
In a last step, international as well as European regulations and anti- discrimination agreements concerning minority rights will be discussed, trying to interpret their I applicability to the present situation in Austrian foe autochthonous minority groups as well as migrant populations.

Prüfungsmethode/n
The students are required to apply theirknowledge to a current minority problem by making use of texts they workedwith. The students have to use German and English texts. Regardless of thelanguages used students will be required to have their texts proofread tomaximise linguistic correctness.

Applicability of theories and polica texts toconcrete minority problemschosen by student in cooperation with tutor.
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
Analytical depth of dealing with minorityquestion, identifying relevant political tools such as laws and internationalagreements, applying theoretical models form social and cultural sciences tothe description and analysis of the situation discussed. Formal and linguisticcorrectness, i.e handling of footnotes and bibliography
