Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students will acquire a theoretically founded, practical, and comprehensive understanding of the basic terminology and methodology of videogame criticism, with the special perspective of affect theory. They will develop a deep and contextualised understanding of selected signature game titles that implement affective design elements and interpersonal relationships, with equal consideration given to various genres, indie and mainstream releases.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Reading of theoretical texts and open discussion of these texts in class; team presentations on student-selected, relevant videogames, including student-moderated Q&A session and plenary analysis of a game sequence; seminar paper.

- 20% Active participation in class: Come prepared, read the required theoretical texts, do any additional research if necessary; think critically, and contribute to discussions and analyses.
- 30% Team Presentation (45min): Introduce a game and analyse its affective elements and interpersonal relationship design (15min each, graded individually), do a Q&A (15min, graded together), and moderate a plenary, in-depth discussion of one example sequence; write-up of both individual presentations and any issues brought up during the Q&A and the analysis in a short academic paper to be uploaded on Moodle no later than two weeks after the presentation (pdf, 1000 words each).
- 50% SE-paper: Academic paper presenting an in-depth critique of a game of your choice regarding affective approaches and/or strategies in its relationship design, OR a theoretical argument about affect and relationship design in videogames, to be uploaded on Moodle and handed in as printed copy no later than February 28, 2021, 23:55 (pdf, 4000 words).

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
Quantity and quality of task fulfillment; quantity and quality of theoretical literature used; choice of videogame, quality of analysis, and quality of application of theoretical concepts and terminology.
If a student fails one pillar of assessment (participation, presentation, or paper), they fail the entire seminar!
