Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
This course is intended as a survey of the study of social networks. Classtime will be devoted to learning principles, theoretical perspectives, andappropriate software packages for analyzing social network data. The readingsare a combination of introductory-level material, classic, scholarly readingsin the field, and empirical studies that apply social network analytictechniques to topics relevant to Geographical Sciences and the social sciencesas a whole. The first weeks are structured around readings, group discussion, and lab. You will be given assignments that focus on theory, datacollection, and then analysis. The last few weeks are geared more towardsstudents’ individual projects on a topic of your choosing, and a finalpaper/project.

Examination methodology
Data gathering Exercise. (40% total)
Identify a network you want to study, and gather some data on that network.Write a 1-2 page written report. (25%)
Presentation: present to the class what network data you gathered, and reflecton challenges you encountered and how you tried to overcome them (15%). Thispresentation should include a diagraph visual, with nodes colored to reflectsome kind of attribute of the actors/nodes.
Data analysis assignments. (30% total)
Use basic network measures to describe a network dataset and a write a 1-2page report (15%). Presentation: present to the class your network and youranalyses (15%).
Final Project: Indepth literature review (30%)
Proposal should integrate a substantial amountof coursereadings inaddition to readings uncovered on your own. Thus, students are expected to i)identify a topic for which network data/network analysis is central (it can comefrom a previous assignment) ii) find articles/books/book chapters on thattopic, then write a review/summary of these literature, making attempts torelate these literature to course readings.
