Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Mediation analysis deals with analyzing how well an effect of X on Y can be explained by another variable, called a mediator. In other words, mediation analysis reveals how the predictor indirectly affects the outcome through the mediator.

After successful attendance, the students will understand the methodological principles of mediation analysis. The will understand the different types of mediation (simple mediation, parallel mediation, serial mediation, and moderated mediation) and their implications for theory building.

Further, they will be able to estimate their own (moderated) mediation models using the SPSS macro PROCESS.

The attendees will have the opportunity to discuss specific problems they have faced when analyzing their own mediation models in the past.

Helpful prerequisites are basics in

  • Hypothesis testing

  • Regression analysis

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course consists of two parts:

1. Attending a lecture (with integrated exercises)
2. Writing a term paper.

Examination methodology

Term paper (~ 6000 words)

The term paper should contain a self-conducted empirical project.

Attendees can use their own data or conduct a new (small) study that allows them to test different mediation models.

Examination topic(s)

Theoretical, methodological and empirical elaboration of a selected topic in mediation Analysis.
