Course content
This course aims to survey and critically examine cinematic engagements with issues of societal, cultural, and political relevance, both in historical perspective and in relation to contemporary debates. While the course will focus on a selection of British films from the period between the mid-1990s to today, the issues and questions raised in these films are not exclusively relevant to the British context. Instead, these films provide valuable insights into debates that are as pressing as ever. The recent resurfacing of nationalistic and isolationist, xenophobic and racist, extremist and totalitarian tendencies in ‘Western’ societies and the ongoing attacks on democracy and liberalism urgently necessitate an intensified discussion if we want to protect the values and standards of a compassionate and open society and a peaceful co-existence of cultures, religions, and world-views.
Apart from the study of a number of existing films, students will also be able to engage in their own mini-film projects on themes and issues related to the course. It is hoped that these projects can be made available to a wider audience via a public screening/student film festival at AAU.
