Current mobile and virtual reality (VR) applications are the latest link in a chain of learning technologies that are designed to trigger self-directed and holistic learning experiences. The easy-to-use and visually engaging learning environments provide contextualized input by simultaneously reducing and extending human action and experience (Eisenlauer 2014). Though there is scientific consensus that mobile/VR technologies can be effective in acquiring new skills and knowledge (Domingo and Bradley 2017), the underlying multimodal meaning making practices remain widely unexplored. Existing studies commonly focus on basic operational skills in VR technologies or examine at a more general level the acceptance of virtual reality learning environments (Hsiu-Mei Huang, Shu-Sheng Liaw & Chung-Min Lai 2016).
In the course of this seminar we will explore key tenets in the concept of digital and multimodal literacies and discusses their applicability to mobile/VR enhanced learning environments. The integration of insights from multimodal theory with findings from digital learning helps to identify a set of novel and digital media-specific textual practices. A classroom project on VR content creation shall serve to asses the ways how digital and multimodal literacies can be nurtured, encouraged and reinforced in language learning contexts. Over the course of the seminar, students will gain insights into how the development of mobile/VR learning environments is leaving the specialized and exclusive domain of software engineers and becomes more and more a textual practice that integrates and enhances skills and competencies associated with preceding writing technologies.

Nach erfolgreicher Absolvierung der Lehrveranstaltung können Studierende
- das Konzept ‚digital Literacy‘ anhand von spezifischen syntaktischen, semantischen und pragmatischen Kompetenzen beschreiben und auf Kontexte des digital gestützten Fremdspracherwerbs beziehen
- Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den Konzepten ‚digital literacy‘ und ‚computational literacy‘ (coding) benennen.
- Schlüsselbegriffe des lexiko-grammatikalischen Ansatzes im Spracherwerb definieren und sie in fachlichen Diskursen verwenden.
- Virtual Reality Inhalte für den Erwerb des Englischen entwerfen und diese (unter Anleitung) für eine Sprachlern App programmieren.
