Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The course is designed to provide a first-hand insight into conducting language research from the point of the conception of an idea to the point of completing your work (thesis) and publishing it. The issues we discuss will be applied individually to your research projects. Uponcompletion of the course, students should be able to: 

- demonstrate knowledgeof issues in conducting scientific research; 

- demonstrate a competence inconducting linguistic research; and 

- be fully able to successfully completeyour own projects.

The classes will typically include lectures followed by mini discussions and practical assignments at home.

  • Means of analysis
  • Interpreting the data – quantitative vs. qualitative
  • Presenting your results
  • Scouting and applying for possible publishing venues: conferences, journals, etc.
  • Writing abstracts/proposals for conferences
  • Extracting and developing conference papers from your thesis
  • Winning readers via the ‘blurb’ of your books
  • Revisiting - developing - extrapolating: towards a PhD
  • Applying for grants

In-class Assignments and Continuous Assessment 40%. 

Practical Assignment 60%.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

1. In-class Assignments will involve discussions and presentations; and 

2. Practical Assignment will relate to applying the class discussions to a homework project.
