Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The course will give students the opportunity to plan, discuss and evaluate approaches to communicative English language teaching. Tutorial meetings will assist students in the preparation of lessons and activities, lead to reflections on students’ teaching experiences and will encourage discussions on contemporary issues in communicative EFL teaching in Austria.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The methodology used is an adaptation of Problem Based Learning. Participants will be actively involved in the planning of the content of this course.

Course content

This course introduces students to practical aspects of communicative English language teaching. It offers students the possibility to reflect on their teaching experiences at school, to prepare and plan as well as evaluate their own lessons and to discuss current topics related to teaching English in Austria.

Topics include:

  • Classroom observations and reflections
  • Planning lessons and activities
  • Using textbooks creatively
  • Analysing teaching materials
  • Creating worksheets and materials
  • Classroom language, giving instructions, explanations and feedback
  • Classroom management
  • Dealing with heterogeneous classes
  • Homework assignments
  • Learner assessment
