Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of this seminar, students will be familiar with sport as an important social and cultural space in which language and discourse(s) play a major role. In addition, students will further deepen their knowledge of linguistic and discursive practices and their constitutive functions in the field of sport.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
- theoretical input and discussion of major sociolinguistic and applied linguistic research on the language and discourses of sport
- critical reading and discussion of relevant literature
- practical work with authentic data from e.g. women's football
- short student presentations
Course content
Embedded in the fields of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, the seminar will cover the following aspects:
- communication in / of sport
- text types / genres in sport (e.g. post-match interviews)
- sport and the (new) media
- sport and identity (social, national, ethnic, sexual, gendered etc.)
- sport and the body
- sport, commercialization and globalization
- the language of professional and amateur sport
- specific types of sport such as football

The seminar grade is based on
- active class participation (based on critical prep. reading of available texts) and contributions to discussion in class
- oral presentation (assessed both on its academic content and didactic performance)
- written term paper (assessed both on its academic content, language and outer form
