Horror! A term which is used primalery for a cinematic genre which has entertained individuals for over a century. However, horror films have not only lured moviegoers to the cinema, but also fans of horror fiction . Horror novels, such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus (1818) or Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) can be regarded as the impetus for horror novels.
In this course we are going to discuss the catalyt for horror novels and how it has had an influence on horror movies, too. Moreover, each session will deal with another horror sub-genre, as there exist multifarious sub-categorizations, such as animal horror, splatter, mondo, zombie, giallo, poliziotto etc. A great focus will be on the first horror movies, shot by the German expressionists, such as Robert Wiese and F.W. Murnau. However, also the horror films which were produced in the 1940s and 1950s at the British Hammer Studios will be relevant in our sessions, as these films were primarely literary adaptations. Starting the 1970s the horror genre became a crucial constituent in Hollywood due to films such as Jaws (1975), Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980) and many more, and thus, we will discuss the trigger for this boom.
The first session is mandatory for the acceptance to this course. Moreover, I will introduce the topics for the presentations.
