LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Following an introduction to 18th century Britain and the 18th century British novel, this course will try to explore how the novel as the most popular form of literature in the period reflects the social, cultural and political context of 18th century British society. Through a close reading of the novels representative of the period, the course will aim at discussing topics such as the effects of the Industrial Revolution, the development of the coffee-houses, and the impact of the growing middle-class on culture and society in the so-called `Age of Enlightenment`. At the end of the course, students will have been familiarised with the social, political and cultural context of 18th century Britain, will be able to identify and describe the major characteristic qualities of the culture and society of the period, and interpret the novels of the period within their social and political context.
