Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students should
- examine and interpret written texts critically;
- identify characteristics of the short story genre;
- identify major US American authors of the short story genre;
- identify prevalent themes in the short stories of US American authors;
- engage peers in an academic discussion of literature;
- conduct research to analyze texts;
- evaluate primary and secondary literature for usefulness in writing a paper; and
- analyze literary texts using formal, written academic English.

Course content
At a minimum, this course will cover
- short stories of US American authors;
- theories of literary interpretation; and
- literary themes and terminology.
A cursory introduction to the short story genre in the US will provide students with the minimal necessary background knowledge to understand and critically assess the texts discussed in class and issues raised in the texts, including (but not limited to) race, politics, language, gender, and sexuality. Students will be expected to read primary and secondary sources relating to these issues.
Literature
A course reader with the relevant short stories and secondary literature will be made available at the ÖH for purchase and provided on Moodle in the form of a PDF for free. Further materials will be provided on Moodle.

Examination methodology
- A written proseminar paper on an aspect of one of the short stories read in class (details about paper will be shared in class)
- Active participation in class as evidenced by participating and leading group discussions
- Presentation of various topics agreed upon in class in consultation with course instructor
