Students will learn the basics of how to construct a research-based academic essay. Students will read short stories by Oscar Wilde (see literature below) and will learn how to utilize primary and secondary sources in an English academic essay.

Students are expected to have the following:

  • an understanding of how to organize and write paragraphs;
  • an understanding of how to plan, write, and revise different essay types; and
  • knowledge of basic citation and referencing conventions.

Inhalt/e

This course provides an opportunity for students to practice and develop their academic writing skills in English. Some of the topics that will be covered are the structure and organization of academic texts, the nature and purpose of paragraphs, the development of coherent pieces of writing, the issue of plagiarism, and how to write term papers.

In addition to extensive in-class, peer, and teacher feedback, students are expected to engage in self-directed learning and should avail themselves of the provided materials to improve their writing.

Topics covered:

  • academic essays
  • exam essays
  • doing research for assignments
  • using quotations appropriately
  • avoiding plagiarism
  • organizing writing
  • conventions of academic style
  • peer review/feedback

Literatur

All students should purchase a copy of

Wilde, Oscar. 2012. The Happy Prince and Other Tales. Edited by Eva-Maria König. Reclam: Stuttgart.  <ISBN: 978-3-15-009293-4>

[Students can, however, find copies of the tales online for free. Using the online tales might make referring to the texts difficult though.]

Other readings and assignments will be made available on Moodle.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

The grading for this course will be based on:

  • a timed, in-class essay and
  • an outside-of-class research-based essay.

Both essays must have a pass grade in order to pass the course.

Students are also required to complete multiple in-class and homework assignments throughout the course of the term. These will comprise a portfolio that students will compile and improve over the course of the semester.
