Intended learning outcomes


By the end of this course, students should be able to:

- critically analyse an essay in terms of its structure and style 

- construct an essay plan 

- write a formal argumentative and compare and contrast essay implementing the structure and style taught in class 



Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Group work, workshops, online, extensive self-study, writing assignments in class and written homework assignments.

Students are required to regularly read academic papers in English and discuss them in class in order to develop their academic reading skills and acquire academic vocabulary.

Course content

This course focusses on academic writing and covers the following:

  • paragraph structure
  • essay structure (introduction, main body and conclusion)
  • thesis statements
  • essay planning
  • argumentative essays
  • discussion essays
  • compare and contrast essays
  • essay analysis
  • proof reading
  • citing and referencing (inclu. quoting, paraphrasing and summarising)
  • style and features of formal academic writing (inclu. vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)
