Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students will develop their knowledge of the Stuart and Restoration eras in terms of historical events, social and political developments. They will understand the disruptive influence of the Civil War on the systems of the British monarchy, society, philosophy, and cultural creation through the special lense of Milton's epic poem.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Group work and plenary discussions of theoretical and critical texts; student presentations; production of short, focused critical texts throughout the semester; seminar paper.
Course content
Historical and socio-political overview of the Stuart era, the Civil War, as well as the Restoration era. Philosophical debates of the times and how they influenced the creation of Paradise Lost. Close reading and analysis of Milton's text.
Literature
Students are expected to buy and read any edition of John Milton's Paradise Lost.
All other texts will be provided on Moodle.
Examination information
Examination methodology
Active participation in readings and discussions. Short student presentations, short critical papers throughout the semester, SE paper (4500 words) at the end of the semester.
Examination topic(s)
Contents of Paradise Lost, contextualised with social, political, and cultural information of the period; students can freely choose topic of final paper within the framework of the class topic.

Quality and quantity of information, precision and depth of analysis, quality of argument, quality of secondary sources used.
