LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will acquire insight into the complexities of American food cultures, which go well beyond the popular imagination of a fast food nation. They will develop an understanding of social and environmental justice issues surrounding the production and consumption of food and how certain diets are connected to issues of ethnicity, class, and gender. They will also gain a better understanding of how what Americans -- and by extension everyone else -- put on their plates affects mot only their own health, but the larger human society, nonhuman animals, and local and global ecological sustainability.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Short lecture inputs, film screenings, class discussion and textual analysis.
Inhalt/e
In this seminar, we will explore US-American food cultures, from the Standard American Diet and globally influential fast foods to the complexities of a wide range of ethnic cuisines and recent trends toward veganism, urban farming, and “clean” eating. To this purpose, we will concern ourselves with a wide range of media texts, including the Netflix documentary series Ugly Delicious, films such as Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation, Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn’s What the Health?, and Mark McInnis Urban Roots, and literary texts such as Helena Maria Viramontes’ novel Under the Feet of Jesus, Bich Minh Nguyen’s memoir Stealing Buddha’s Dinner, and two short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri. We will ask ourselves how American food cultures are connected to issues of ethnic, class and gender identity, national health crises, social and environmental justice, animal rights, and ecological sustainability.
