Intendierte Lernergebnisse
By the end of this course, students should
- be familiar with the history of and background influences on American transcendentalism;
- be able to exhibit a working understanding of the central tenets of transcendentalism as expressed in literature, religion, society, education, and other realms;
- be conversant in the major and minor literary (prose and poetry) and non-fiction works of the period; and
- be able to analyze and contextualize literary works of the period.

This course will include (but isn't limited to) short lectures by the instructor and student-led discussions of texts and presentations on texts' socio-cultural context.

Non-fiction and fiction works from the American Transcendentalism period (texts to be covered available on the syllabus/Moodle)

REQUIRED:
Buell, Lawrence, ed. 2006. The American Transcendentalists: Essential Writings. New York: Random House.
The majority of course readings will come from the text listed above; you should have a copy in class at all times. Other supplementary materials will be provided electronically on Moodle.

Prüfungsinhalt/e
The written examination (20% of final grade) will be based on
- the prose texts and poetry assigned in class;
- the socio-political/historical/cultural contexts of the works discussed in class;
- an analysis of a text excerpt/short poem; and
- factual/biographical information about the period and its authors.
Any changes to exam content will be agreed upon with students during the course term.
The seminar paper (50% of final grade) must be address an aspect of American transcendentalism. Students will present their proposed topics at the end of term and will then have the topics approved in consultation with the instructor.
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
The grading for this course is as follows:
- Participation & Participation Log: 30%
- Written Examination: 20%
- Seminar Paper (4,500 – 6,000 words): 50%
You will need to achieve passing grades in each of these categories in order to receive a passing grade for the class. Assignments must be submitted on-time.
