They will further develop their skills of literary analysis and interpretation and learn how to engage critically with poetry and (short) fiction from a perspective that takes into account questions of race, class, and gender.

In-class analysis and discussion of assigned primary texts, enhanced by contextual material; short lecture inputs to guide discussion and help historically situate primary texts; short presentations on selected topics by students.
Inhalt/e
This seminar will focus on a range of texts of the literary and cultural movement known as the Beat Generation. We will read Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957) and short stories, manifestos, and poetry by writers such as Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Amiri Baraka, and Gary Snyder. The course addresses questions concerning both the literary historical role and the broader cultural contexts of the Beat Generation: What were the movement’s (literary) predecessors, what its links to jazz music? How did the bohemian community known as the Beat Generation relate to Post-World War II society? How did their embrace of drug culture, socially deviant forms of sexuality, Zen Buddhism, and their concomitant attacks on consumerism, militarism, and conformity relate to articulating new forms of art and spirituality? What was the movement’s impact on U.S. American society as a symbol of protest and as a counterculture? With such questions in mind, the aim is not only to introduce major Beat writers and poets through close readings, but also to understand their broader cultural meaning and their influence on U.S. American culture up until today.
