Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students will further develop their skills in the systematic analysis of literary texts and advance their competence in interpreting texts within their specific socio-cultural and historical contexts. They will also gain a basic knowledge of the literary historical period of American modernism.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
In-class exploration of primary texts through close textual analysis; short input lectures to help contextualize primary literature and guide in-class discussion; short presentations on selected topics by students.
Course content
This seminar focuses on fiction by two iconic U.S. American modernists, F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) and Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). Turning to key short stories as well as Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925) and Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms (1929, excerpts) and The Old Man and the Sea (1952), we will discuss topics such as death and loss, war, love, travel, tourism, mass culture, and gender, but also the authors’ specific narrative styles and techniques, their construction of characters, and questions of genre. While enabling participants to further practice the systematic analysis of literary texts, closely reading these profoundly influential “classics” also aims to provide a broader understanding of the literary historical period of American modernism.
