Intended learning outcomes
A deeper understanding of the most crucial differences between genres and of the possibilities of how to analyse texts is to be developed, plus an deeper insight into the various approaches to the interpretation of literary as well as cultural texts (which may have a multicultural, global validity, especially in terms of fostering the readers’ empathy – literature, culture, gender studies etc.);
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
For a successful completion of this class, students are required to contribute to our weekly sessions by demonstrating and explaining what they have read since then and give short feedback (individual or group), to write b) two home assignments which are supposed to start discovering and mapping the field and topic of the c) final paper. The assignments will be corrected and commented on in order to provide the students with the necessary feedback to eventually produce a proper, critically valuable academic paper. All students are expected to read the poems and stories made available via Moodle from one class to the next.
Course content
“Introduction to Literary Studies II” builds up on “Introduction to Literary Studies I” (and the former Introduction to Literature a/b). It was devised as a class aimed at pointing to the many faces of literature, with a special focus on the genres/ text types poetry and short story, covering a number of various Anglophone literatures. Looking right into them might be challenging, yet it is ever so enriching. It will be beneficial for you to become familiar with ways of conducting critical in-depth analyses of written texts and their subsequent adaptations in media other than written texts (e.g. films, TV-series, songs, music videos, videogames), concentrating on techniques, stylistic features, concepts, and theories active in literature, culture and gender studies .
We will focus on the texts’ origins, the reception of written works on the part of the audience, the importance of context and the potential of changes in the process of understanding and interpreting texts that are brought along by a context changed through intermedial adaptation of the source.
