LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students develop a critical understanding of how technologyand societal power relations, particularly in regards to gender, are entwined. They reflect on and develop ways of addressing and subverting these throughengaging with each other in an inter- and trans(*)disciplinary context.Learning hands-on skills to actively intervene in technology production andconsumption, they are encouraged to use those skills in follow-up projects.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
The course is strongly grounded in participatory approachessuch as Paulo Freire’s ‘Paedagogy of the Oppressed’, Black (queer) feministparticipatory approaches to teaching and learning (e.g. those of bell hooks),and Participatory Action Research as well as Participatory Design. A centralquestion that we want students to ask in relation to all coursework is why? – in relation to unpackingarguments, to the valuation of some (sources of) knowledge over others, and tothe reason for their own involvement with the materials/topics. In line withour overall approach to teaching and learning, we supplement more conventionalteaching methods (such as reading and discussing academic texts) withinteractive and workshop-like activities. The course furthermore includespractical sessions, in which students will be encouraged to find their own approachto hacking and to apply it to some technoscientific artefact. These experimentsshould foster the students’ understanding of technological concepts and howdifferent social categories become embedded on a technological level – andtherefore also how these technologies can be changed towards more inclusive andresponsible ways of acting within our society.
Inhalt/e
As science and technoscience play ever more important rolesin our lives, it has also become clear that they are a predominantly white andandrocentric endeavour. In the 1990s, at the dawn of the web, cyberfeministutopias arose – visions of a world where gender and other categorisationsevaporated into a seamless web of anti-identitarian dust. Today, about 20 yearsafter the emergence of these utopias, technoscience is still dominated by whiteandrocentrism.
What happened to opportunities of changing gender andtechnology with and through each other? Where are the cyberfeminist hackers? Why does technology resist social change? Or is it the other way around? Whereare leverage points for technofeminist interventions into technology andgender? Can we really hack gender the way technology is hacked? And can we hacktechnology to hack gender? The course seeks to address these and otherquestions, explicitly trying to bridge the gap between IT and social science, enabling productive inter- and trans(*)disciplinary conversations, and empoweringstudents by linking academic insights and perspectives to applications andexperiences.
The topics of the seminar are:
- Introduction: Technology, Gender, Hacking
- Reproductive technologies and expertise
- Gendered inscriptions into technologicalinfrastructures
- Surveillance technologies
- Participatory/emancipatory design
