LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The objective of this course is to improve students’ English scientific writing in two areas:

Knowledge development: Students will learn about the primary written modes of scientific communication—i.e., empirical, theoretical, and review articles, meta-analyses, book chapters, general-audience pieces. Example topics include: understanding the components of an article; formatting a manuscript; the publication and review process from start to finish; authorship and collaboration; selecting a journal; and how to properly credit sources.

Skill development: Students will be presented with principles and strategies for effective scientific writing in English. Example topics include: selecting a topic and determining scope; organizing, editing, and revising written work; achieving coherence, flow, and concision; avoiding common grammatical and word-choice errors among non-native English speakers; quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing other people’s work; overcoming writer’s block and anxiety.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Weekly seminars will involve audio-visual presentations by the instructor, classroom discussions, and application activities (e.g., worksheets, writing critiques).

Inhalt/e

With significant scientific globalization in the last half-century, English has become the dominant language of communication and information-sharing in the social sciences. This course prepares students for effective scientific writing in English. Students will develop foundational knowledge and skills necessary for publishing in English-language academic journals. Following this course, students will feel confident contributing written work to the international scientific community.

Literatur

Students will be assigned a selection of readings and exercises from the following books (provided by the instructor):

  • American Psychological Association. (2010). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.
  • Glasman-Deal, H. (2010). Science Research Writing For Non-Native Speakers Of English: A Guide for Non-Native Speakers of English. London, UK: Imperial College Press.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Students will be given assignment descriptions and evaluation schemes at the beginning of the course.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

Students will complete their major course paper on the topic of their master or doctoral thesis or an alternative area of research interest.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

The primary method of assessment will involve an evolving piece of written work that students will submit for evaluation and feedback on multiple occasions across the semester. The written work will progress incrementally alongside the content of the course—i.e., students will continually apply their course learning and instructor’s feedback to this developing piece of writing. By the end of the semester, students will have a manuscript of publication quality that they will be encouraged to submit to a journal or some other academic outlet. In addition to this capstone paper, students will complete a series of writing and editing exercises and critiques of published work. Students will also complete short quizzes on the APA Publication Manual’s citation and style guide.
