Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Die Unterrichtssprache ist Englisch.  Vortrag, Literaturanalyse, Gruppenarbeiten, selbstgesteuertes Lernen sowie persönliche Reflexionen. Internationalen Gastdozenten (aus dem Bereich der internationalen Bildungspolitik) werden über online Medien eingeladen. Schriftliche Arbeiten können in deutscher Sprache verfasst werden, falls erforderlich.

Course content

Der Kurs behandelt die aktuellen Entwicklungen der internationalen Systeme des Lebenslangen Lernens im Zusammenhang  mit und im Vergleich zu europäischen und österreichischen Politiken.

Das Konzept des Lebenslangen Lernens (Interessen, Ziele, Wirkungen) sowie das österreichische System- und die Politik- des Lebenslangen Lernens werden als Grundlage für die weiteren Diskussionen und Vergleiche der Bildungssysteme und politischen Entwicklungen in den Heimatländern der Studierenden eingeführt. Individuelle und persönliche Erfahrungen mit dem Lernen und Bildungsprozesse sind die Basis und erhebliche Ressource für den Kurs.

Intended learning outcomes

Students will be able to

  • research international policy and research documents (based on own research questions)
  • interpret national and international lifelong learning developments from an open and international point of view
  • reflect on their own learning experiences in the context of diverse (formal, non-formal and informal) settings
  • write critical and analytical papers

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Stimulatingpresentations, reading and writing assignments,group work, self-directed learning, personal reflections and internationalguest lecturers (from the field of international education policy, will bebrought in via online and digital means, such as Skype). There will be an e-learning session on 16.10. The language of instruction is English, while papers can also be produced in German, if required. 

Course content

The course deals with the current ongoing developments of the International Lifelong learning systems in the context of and in comparison to the Austrian and European policies.

The conception of Lifelong Learning (interests, aims, interventions, impacts) as well as the Austrian lifelong learning system and policies will be introduced as a basis for discussing and comparing the educational systems and policy developments of the students´ home countries. Individual and personal experiences with learning and education processes are the foundation and significant resources for the course.

The following issues will be discussed in more detail:

  • Structure, development and comparison of the International, European as well as national Lifelong Learning institutions and policies (students analyse and compare their national Lifelong learning developments)
  • The effects of Lifelong Learning on the individual, communities and society as a whole: how Lifelong learning can promote empowerment, social cohesion, equity and equality
  • Wider benefits of Lifelong Learning (for example increased self-confidence, civic engagement, (mental) health, life skills, social cohesion, etc.)
  • Internationalisation of and mobility in Lifelong learning, education in migration societies and diversity in learning situations
  • Mobility programmes: students examine and exchange experiences with mobilities, mobility programmes and learning in an international context

Prior knowledge expected

The course is aimed at Incoming students from various specializations, as well as at bachelor students in educational science. 20 participants are expected; maximum 35.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Gruppenarbeit oder individuelle Analyse, abhängig von Größe und Struktur der Gruppe.   Sie verfassen eine schriftliche Arbeit zu ausgesuchten Gesichtspunkten in Bezug zum Bereich des Lebenslangen Lernens (ca. 10 Seiten in englischer oder deutscher Sprache, falls erforderlich).

Examination topic(s)

Die Studierenden erarbeiten und präsentieren einen individuell ausgewählten Bildungsaspekt der aktuellen Entwicklungen im internationalen Kontext, zB Internationales Lebenslanges, persönliche Reflexionen über "Lebenslanges Lernen in meinem Heimatland", Erfahrungsaustausch zu Lernen in internationalen Kontexten, etc.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

Anwesenheit, aktive Mitarbeit, Präsentation eines Exposés, Übungen und Hausübungen, Abgabe der Seminararbeit 

Examination methodology

Group work or individual analysis, depending on the size and structure of the group.  Students will produce a paper discussing selected aspects in the area of (international) lifelong learning (approx. 10 pages in English or in German, if required).   

Examination topic(s)

The students will present a specific lifelong learning aspect of the developments and system in their home country from an international perspective such as,  personal reflections related to „Lifelong learning in my country“, and exchange of experiences of learning in an international context.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

Attendance, active participation, excesses and homework, presentation of an exposé, submission of the seminar paper.
