Intended learning outcomes

Vorbereitung auf internationale englische Sprachprüfung IELTS für Aufnahme an einer englischsprachigen bzw. internationalen Universität. Studierende trainieren die vier Fertigkeiten (Hörverständnis, Leseverständnis, Sprechen, akademisches Schreiben) und diagnostizieren ihre eigene Defizite, um bei Bedarf  die IELTS-Prüfung auf Zielniveau ablegen zu können.

Studierende sollen in Kleingruppen eine moderierte Trainingseinheit in englischer Sprache leiten zu können.

Studierende trainieren das Verfassen von Berichten, Analysen und Fachtexten in klarer, informationsorientierter "reader-friendly" englischer Sprache.

Intended learning outcomes

Students analyze their current level of English skills and  train their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for the purposes of business interaction and academic study in English, especially to be able to tackle the international IELTS test of English proficiency for study purposes (or equivalent, e.g. TOEFL). 

Students should also be able to produce academic and business texts as well as short data analyses (presenting numbers in English/IELTS writing task format) written in a reader-friendly way in clear, relatively simple and accurate English. They should train working in a team to run an interactive workshop session in English on a current business topic .

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Training tasks using a communicative methodology with peer and teacher feedback supported by online inputs. Online and teacher-mediated training for IELTS test formats. Special priority to IELTS training (with TOEFL available as an alternative test format for students who need to train for TOEFL).

Students work in teams to plan & run  interactive workshop sessions in English on subject-specialist topics.

Reader-friendly business/academic writing - process writing with individual feedback (feedback-editing loop);

Pair & groupwork; Moodle activities and training tasks.

Course content

  • Team interactive workshop presentations -  team of students choose study-related current interest topics, combining subject focus, presentation techniques and team work.
  • Study-related topics selected by students for individual special-interest academic/business papers, often bachelor's theses are used as a content focus.
  • Reader-friendly business and academic writing using official IELTS training materials.
  • Speaking training - IELTS topics.
  • Listening training - advanced listening, range of accents and topics based on daily-life situations for students studying abroad,  including academic listening training(based on IELTS & TOEFL training materials)
  • Training in reading academic texts & handling IELTS questions, speed reading, vocabulary building, focus on key grammar points for clear English written communication.
  • CV / Resumé - writing a powerful narrative CV.
  • Vocabulary development - business vocabulary, for  law students legal vocabulary.
  • Issues in English grammar for effective business communication.

Prior knowledge expected

Students must already have passed English I and English II on the AAU Business Administration undergraduate English programme, or have gained credit for equivalent courses taken at other institutions.

Course workbook, online inputs, recommended readings, IELTS practice tests. TOEFL and Cambridge Business English Higher training materials also available.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Distribution of points for coursework as follows =  Methods for assessing course success (% of final grade): 

  • Team Presentation (25%);
  •  IELTSlistening test (10%) & IELTS reading test (15%); 
  • Portfolio of written work(25%);
  • Vocabulary test (10%)
  • Classwork and homework (15%)

Continuous assessment throughout the course on course tasks and assessed writing tasks (writing portfolio).

End-of-semester  listening and reading tests (IELTS format - alternative options = TOEFL and CBEC formats)

Team workshop-style presentation session on subject-specialist topic.

IELTS  listening and reading tests with answers submitted online. Academic or business paper on own choice of topic (600 words). Team workshop session. Assessed homework tasks for writing portfolio.
