Intendierte Lernergebnisse
In this course, we will consider various ways of understanding how aspects of the environment, society and culture interact with one another. We will begin by considering literature that conceptualizes such interactions in the framework of a coupled ‘system’. From there, we will explore literature from related fields to deepen our understandings of how humans, society, and culture interact with and impact their environment (and the other way around). The course will be very interactive, and require regular participation and attendance. Throughout the semester, students will be encouraged to think about their own ‘system’ composed of human and natural elements, and to think about the dynamics of this system from the viewpoints of various bodies of environmental and social science literature. Students will be given skills in oral and written communication, and also experience in conducting individual research into their chosen topic.
Learning outcomes: students will receive an understanding of fundamental concepts pertaining to the topic of coupled systems. They will gain experience in working in groups, giving presentations, facilitating, writing, and conducting research independently.

Paper 1: Identify a Coupled System (20%):
Write a 1-2 page paper (single spaced, 12 point font) identifying and describing a coupled human and natural system of your choice. You must use the language/terminology introduced in the course in your description of your coupled system.
Elevator Pitch of your Coupled System (20%):
Give a 5-10 minute talk on what your coupled system is all about. Details to follow.
Individual Presentation of Final Project (15%):
Your chosen system will be presented at the end of the semester. For this presentation (roughly 15 minutes in length), you must offer a clear description of your system, and also have developed a visual to communicate your system. You must also link your description/analysis of this system to course readings. This will be an individual presentation (more details to follow). It will inform your Final Paper.
Final Paper: A research proposal on your coupled system (45%):
The Final Proposal will be an individual proposal consisting of 4-5 pages in length (single spaced, 12 point Times Roman Font). An additional, final page will be attached as an Appendix to this proposal, and that final page will consist of a visual diagram you have developed to visualize your system.
For your final proposal, I expect to see a rethinking of the coupled system, now that you have experienced many more readings. Thus, your proposal should have a substantial literature review, in which you are also expected to add to the body of literature introduced in this class. Students who primarily draw only from course material, and do not do a substantial amount of individual research (literature review) on their own will be in danger of failing this assignment. Find relevant research articles, books, and so forth that will shape your paper. After this literature review, I would like to see an outline of how you plan to study your coupled system. Call attention to any potential problems or challenges you might have in studying this coupled system. More details of expectations for this paper will follow.
