Inhalt/e

Self-organizing systems are ubiquitous in nature and have many applications in engineering systems. Many self-organizing systems occur in fluidic environments, e.g., schools of fish or flocks of bird/insects, bacterial and active particle suspensions, polymers and debris flows, etc. In this course, we will review the basic physics and fluid mechanics principles which are used in self-organizing systems. More specifically, we introduce the basic principles that improve the performance of synchronized locomotion relative to solitary locomotion under different conditions.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Some prior physics knowledge is plus but not necessary. The basics will be explained in the lectures. 

Literatur

A list of papers of papers on self-organizing systems will be provided.

Prüfungsinformationen

Prüfungsmethode/n

The students review one of the suggested papers and write a report about it. They will also review two other reports and provide feedback (anonymously). They revise their final draft based on the peer and my feedback. The final grade is based on the final report submitted.

A list of suggested papers for review will be provided.
