LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will acquire a theoretically founded comprehensive understanding of the interconnection between the emergence of New Queer Cinema and the rapidly shifting and diversifying representations of HIV/AIDS in film. They will develop a deep and contextualised familiarity with signature movies that they can select from a list of eminent examples.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The format of this class is based on active, responsible, and egalitarian student participation, and will have a strong workshop character. After discussing the general theoretical framework in the group, team-presentations will introduce selected films. One student focuses on the socio-cultural context, and their partner on the example film in detail. This is followed up by a student-driven Q&A to prepare for a collaborative in-depth analysis of selected scenes. The other students can then either write critical sportlights dealing with elements of the film, or peer reviews of their colleagues' texts. A willingness to contribute actively to a cooperative, supportive, and inspirational atmosphere is expected from all participants.

Inhalt/e

To give us enough time to work intensively with relevant films and contextualise them sufficiently in critical discourse, after establishing the basic theoretical framework, we will deal with ten of the following films (selected by the students):

  • Parting Glances (1986)
  • Longtime Companion (1989)
  • Zero Patience (1993)
  • Philadelphia (1993)
  • And the Band Played On (1993)
  • Jeffrey (1995)
  • It’s My Party (1996)
  • Love! Valour! Compassion! (1997)
  • Angels in America (2003)
  • A Home at the End of the World (2004)

  • The 24th Day (2004)
  • 3 Needles (2006)

  • We Were Here (2010)
  • Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
  • The Normal Heart (2014)
  • Holding the Man (2015)
  • It’s Only the End of the World (2016)

  • Theo & Hugo (2016)

During the wrap-up session at the end of the seminar, students will share and constructively discuss each other's ideas for topics for the seminar paper.

Literatur

All movies are available from the course instructor, if needed.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Students score points for all activities during the semester, and assessment is a partially collaborative effort between the course instructor and participating students.

Compulsory team presentations of example films are worth up to 40 points (one assessment for all members). Additionally, students can choose to write individual short critical spotlights or review their colleagues' contributions for up to 6 points each (half of which based on student suggestions).

At the end of the course, the total of the points achieved translates directly into a grade:

1A = 100 – 91

2B = 90 – 81

3C = 80 – 61

4D = 60 – 51

5F = 50 – 0

Prüfungsinhalt/e

For the introductory film presentations, students can choose to work on the film as a text or the context for one of the ten examples.

Students can freely decide on the topic for their critical sportlights, as long as they deal with relevant aspects of the film discussed.

Peer reviews are supposed to be constructive and help the reviewed person, pointing out strengths and weaknesses of their text.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

The introductory team presentation of one of the example films is compulsory, and is worth a maximum of 40 points for presentation, Q&A, plenary analysis, and write-up.

Additionally, students can write either critical spotlights or peer reviews of their colleagues' spotlights. In both cases, up to three points per text can be achieved for the fulfillment of formal criteria, and another maximum of three points for the effectiveness of the text (suggested by reviewer and reviewed).

Students are expected to assess their colleagues‘ contributions realistically, and all suggestions will be discussed.
