Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to provide basic insights into the legal aspects of religion and its manifestations, with special emphasis to questions of religious practice in the employment context. It will help students become more competent and sensitive as to legal aspects of religious issues.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lecturing (at least two units), discussions, task oriented exercises and students' presentations

Course content

Development of fundamental rights - with a focus on the freedom of religion and constitutional aspects of faith; the role of religion and faith in Austria; basic legal aspects of employment (that is, labour law and social security law); principals of equal treatment (constitutional level, statutes, decrees); discrimination of employees because of faith, manifestations of faith (e.g. denial of promotion because of being a catholic; dismissal due to religious clothing, prayers outside regular breaks etc); entitlement to additional rights such as (more) holidays, rooms for prayers, specific food in the staff canteen.
