COURSE SPECIFIC STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

(1) To develop a basic understanding of how language is organized, how knowledge

of language is acquired, how knowledge of language is put to use, in the real-time

processes of producing and understanding “basic level” linguistic units - words,

sentences - and stretches of discourse, in monolingual, bilingual speakers.

(2) To become familiar with a variety of empirical tools used by empirical linguists

and psycholinguists to study language representation, language acquisition and

language use.

(3) To investigate the concepts, assumptions and research methodologies used in

psycholinguistics.

TRANSFERABLE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

(4) Engage in independent and reflective learning.

(5) Develop Analytical and critical thinking for creative problem solving

Lehrmethodik

(1) To examine the conceptual basis of the human ability to acquire and use language,

and to examine the biological and social underpinnings of this system.

(2) To examine different proposals for how language knowledge is acquired,

represented, and processed.

(3) To study how languages are processed and acquired across the lifespan, in

monolingual and bilingual populations

Inhalt/e

Experimental Linguistics and Psycholinguistics belong to the field of Cognitive Science.

These are rapidly evolving, interdisciplinary disciplines that study how humans represent,

acquire and use language. Understanding the knowledge base of psycholinguistics as one

of the major components of theoretical and empirical linguistics.

Much like breathing, walking and seeing, speaking and understanding our native

language are natural activities we engage in, many times a day, with little or no conscious

awareness or effort. Scientists have, however, uncovered the complexity and creativity

underlying even the simplest act of human language use. In this course you will develop

an understanding of how language is organized, acquired and used by monolingual and

multilingual speakers and become familiar with the empirical methods used to study

these questions. The more you understand about language, how it is acquired, and how it

is processed, the more you understand about yourself and the people around you.
