Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The purpose of this course is to help students understand the role and function of museum learning in nowadays' learning society. The course develops skills which are important for working on the field of museum education. Students will learn to plan and apply traditional and innovative museum education methods and museum learning programs for diverse target groups. The course reeals the theoretical background and the current international trends of museum learning.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Active participation of students is required. Applied teaching methods: lecture; discussions; individual tasks for stundent; group works, presentations 

Course content

Beyond revealing the current social, educational and cultural roles, functions and tasks of museums the course focuses on the theory and practise of museum education and it examines the connectins between museums and adult education/lifelong learning. Students will also learn about the theory and practise of museum communication and marketing.

1.) Historical development of museums. New roles, functions and tasks of museums in the 21st century. Museums and the postmodern/learning society. 

2.) Theoretical background of museum learning. Informal, nonformal and formal learning in the museum. Learning theories and learning styles in museum learning. 

3.) Museum education methodology. Museum education methods for diverse age groups/target groups.

4. Museums as places for lifelong learning. Museums and adult education. Applied methods and programs of adult learning in museums.

5. The exhibition from the point of view of learning, Museum and interpretation. Telling stories trought objects and images. Methods and tools of interactivity. 

6. Museums on the Internet; Innovative museum websites promoting museum learning.

7. Cooperation between educational/health/social etc. institutions and mseums. 

8. Museum marketing and management. Communication and Public Relations in connection with museum learning and museum education.

9. Museums and the local community. 

10. Volunteer programs in the museum.

11. International museum organizations.

12. Evaluation and visitor studies.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Museum learning report (written): 40%

Museum learning report (class presentation): 30%
