Intended learning outcomes

 

Students work in teams (4-6 people) to plan a business start-up and draw up a business plan. They practice holding team meetings, train reader-friendly business writing (business plans),  and work on building up vocabulary related to business start-ups and running a business. They are  introduced to the Principled Negotiation method from the Harvard Negotiation Project.

Target outcomes:

  • Students should be able to discuss  the standard steps involved planning a business start-up.
  • Students should be able to run team decision-making meetings using appropriate language to moderate the  team interaction and discussion. They should be able to employ simple techniques for handling conflict in team discussionsand also use visualisation to record and structure discussion inputs. They should also be able to take part constructively in a meeting as a participant: LBS - listen, build, signal approach.
  • Students should also be familiar the basics of Harvard Principled Negotiation method (developed by the Harvard Negotiation Project) and use these insights to handle simple negotiation scenarios.
  • Students should develop informative reader-friendly business writing skills: they should be able to write a business plan section (business report) in a clear, informative, reader-friendly style.
  • Students should train and use the lexis for describing business start-ups and small-business management.


Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

  • Communicative methodology with a series of discussion tasks (group meetings) to plan a business start-up. 
  • Peer and teacher feedback.
  • Group work: teams select a business concept,  plan the start-up & draw up a business plan for the start-up concept.
  • Individual team meetings are held with  teacher for individual feedback.
  • Process approach to writing (feedback loop).
  • Exercises to develop negotiation skills.
  • Online vocabulary training.

EXAM INFORMATIONExam methodology

Meetings test & negotiation scenario (25% & 10% of course points respectively); business plan section (30% of course points); vocabulary test (15%); course work, homework,  Moodle activities (20%).          

Exam topics


1-hour group meetings test (choice of scenarios related to launching and running a business); pairwork negotiations (sales & after-sales service); Business Plan - each student writes ONE section of team plan.  Vocabulary test reviewing vocabulary for businestart-ups and running a business, business plan.

Exam mode

Meetings test - one hour team meetings with teacher
Negotiations scenario - pair work (assessed) in final regular lesson
Business Plan: First draft, finished version, edited version
Online vocabulary test (35 minutes, 60 questions)




Course content

  • Setting up a small business - key stages (critical path), related terminology.
  • Holding meetings: chairperson skills (managing discussion of ideas & interaction); effective participation; visualisation of inputs;  meetings protocol tools
  • Writing a business plan - reader-friendly business writing, key content of business plan
  • Business negotiations in English - Principled Negotiation (Harvard Negotiation Project) and training in a simple negotiation scenario
  • Introducing Mama Biashara - a UK business charity operating in Kenya and specializing in funding small-scale business start-ups (business as the motor of development,  listening training).
  • Vocabulary building - training lexis for  start-ups and managing small businesses.

Prior knowledge expected

Regular students enrolled at AAU should have already completed English for Business Administration 1.  554.01....................

High-school diploma level English skills are required.  B2
