LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will learn to: a) Develop their own attributional Life Cycle Assessment applications for socio-ecological research, b) Understand the limitations of the attributional method and the ongoing advancement towards a consequential understanding, c) Critically reflect the potentials of the method and to interpret the results of LCA-based research |
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
The students will receive introductory inputs to the concept and the application of attributional LCAs. They will work with a simplified LCA, to a) familiarize themselves with commonly used databases (GEMIS, ecoinvent), b) and conduct an LCA in excel, based on information from GEMIS, in a hands-on fashion, performing their own calculations. This will enable the students to conduct their own LCA-based research projects. The calculations and analysis will be based on real data for Austria. Students will present the results of their research work during the final course session as groups and submit individually their calculations, a technical report and a reflection on the method. Students will be required to bring laptops with spreadsheet software installed to the course (if a laptop is not available, arrangements can be made). The research projects include 1) Data handling from GEMIS and potentially other sources, 2) Preparation of LCA information from GEMIS in excel , 3) Application of required calculation steps, 4) Analysis of results, preparation of figures, etc 5) Presentation (group work) 6) Documentation in a technical report 7) Seminar paper in form of a technical report |
Inhalt/e
This course offers an introduction to the method of Life Cycle Assessment and its applications for social ecology research. In hands-on work, the students will conduct their own attributional LCA-based research projects. In doing so, they will become familiar with a method which is widely applied in research on sustainable production and consumption as well as used by companies and other organizations to support decision making or product labelling. This course offers an introduction into basic concepts, key ideas and crucial assumptions, and limitations of the method. |
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
