LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The course aims to provide insights into ways in which contemporary cities address their prospects for sustained growth, and into people’s responses to current urban policies. It proceeds from the theoretical (introduction of the basic concepts) to the more practical, using examples of modern urban phenomena. Students gain understanding of cities as dynamic spaces and can critically asses the interplay of top-down urban policies and bottom-up reactions of the citizens. They practice summarizing key concepts and findings from articles dealing with the topic as well as familiarize themselves with fieldwork and/or discursive research through doing a case-study of a “trendy” urban phenomenon of their own choice. By presenting their individual research to class, they demonstrate an understanding of the trends that shape contemporary urban life and the ability to analyze and synthesize information from fieldwork, media and academic literature.

Focusing on case-studies from Ljubljana, this seminar also complements the course “Cultural Processes in Europe” by Dr.  Alexandra Schwell and may help its students with their fieldwork research or topic analysis.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The course combines lectures and seminars where students discuss selected texts and at the end present case-studies of their own choice. The format of the presentation is decided by students in agreement with the lecturer and can range from oral or written presentations to visual narratives. Students are expected to show understanding of basic theoretical approaches to selected urban phenomenon and are encouraged to use creative tools for analysis and presentation of their individual research.

Inhalt/e

The course provides theoretical introduction of the basic concepts related to contemporary cities, such as urbanization, creativity, sustainability/degrowth, participatory urbanism or resistance, and support them with practical examples of modern urban phenomena: urban gardening and food-related practices, urban cycling and other forms of sustainable mobility, resistance practices against austerity (social movements, squatting, informal economy), co-working and other solutions for precariousness, community-led urban renewal etc. These examples are further illustrated by ethnographic films from all over the world. Selected articles (listed under literature) serve as the starting point for discussions with students and as a theoretical framework for their ethnographic/discursive case-studies.
