Intended learning outcomes

This course aims at equipping doctoral students or students in a more advanced phase in their postgraduate curriculum with the basic knowledge and skills required to carry out empirical research, understand how knowledge is generated, reflect on concepts in management literature, and understand how academic literature reports results and findings.

Course content

The course provides an overview of theories and research methods used in the field of management. Please note that this is not a specific quantitative or qualitative research methods course and that data analysis techniques will not be covered in detail.

The topics covered are:

  • Theories in Management ('classics and contemporaries')
  • Research Questions
  • Theory Development
  • Research Design
  • Quantitative Methods (e.g. survey, secondary data, observation)
  • Qualitative Methods (e.g. case studies, interviews, focus groups, observation)
  • Mixed Methods - combining quantitative and qualitative methods in analysis and synthesis, Qualitative Comparative Analysis 
  • Experiments (natural, randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, vignettes)
  • Reporting Results and Findings in academic literature

Students are expected to participate in class discussions, work on topic-related assignments, present in a flipped classroom, and participate in peer-review.
