Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
The course will provide opportunities to plan, discuss, and evaluate approaches to communicative EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching within a supportive and cooperative learning environment. The tutorial meetings will facilitate reflections on participants' first teaching experiences and encourage discussions on contemporary topics related to communicative EFL teaching in Austria.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The methodology used is an adaptation of problem-oriented learning with teaching materials specifically designed for this course. Participants will be actively involved in syllabus design as well as in the implementation of individual tutorial group meetings.
Course content
The course introduces students to practical aspects of communicative EFL teaching. It provides guidance in classroom observation and in preparing, teaching, and analysing lessons.

- Planning lessons and short activities
- Using textbooks creatively
- Classroom language, giving instructions and explanations
- Preparing and using worksheets & visual aids
- Characteristics of good practice activities
- Meaningful homework assignments
- The roles of the teacher
- Classroom management and teacher-student interaction
- Dealing with heterogeneous classes
- Giving feedback to learners, learner assessment
- Preparing student-centred lessons
Prior knowledge expected
Students are expected to read some information about problem-oriented learning provided by the course instructor prior to the first class meeting. The relevant text will be available for download on Moodle.
