The first class meeting on 7 March is immediately followed by an initial meeting with the practice supervisors. All formal aspects regarding the teaching practice (PPS1 & PPS2) as well as the students' and supervisors' responsibilities will be discussed in that meeting. Attendance is mandatory.

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The course will provide opportunities to plan, discuss, and evaluate approaches to communicative EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching within a supportive and cooperative learning environment. The tutorial meetings will facilitate reflections on participants' first teaching experiences and encourage discussions on contemporary topics related to communicative EFL teaching in Austria.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The methodology used is an adaptation of problem-oriented learning with teaching materials specifically designed for this course. Participants will be actively involved in syllabus design as well as in the implementation of individual tutorial group meetings.

Inhalt/e

The course introduces students to practical aspects of communicative EFL teaching. It provides guidance in classroom observation and in preparing, teaching, and analysing lessons. 

Selection of topics covered:

  • Classroom observation
  • Planning lessons and short activities
  • Using textbooks creatively
  • Classroom language, giving instructions and explanations
  • Preparing and using worksheets & visual aids
  • Characteristics of good practice activities
  • Meaningful homework assignments
  • The roles of the teacher
  • Classroom management and teacher-student interaction
  • Dealing with heterogeneous classes
  • Giving feedback to learners, learner assessment
  • Preparing student-centred lessons

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

Students are expected to read some information about problem-oriented learning provided by the course instructor prior to the first class meeting. The relevant text will be available for download on Moodle.
