Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Nonhuman animals are an integral part of modern societies through their presence ascompanion animals, as unbearably cute characters in movies, as bearers of wisdom in fairy tales and ancient myths, as highly entertaining LOLCats on social media, but also as involuntary providers of commodities like leather, fur, down, wool and food, as test objects in medical research facilities, as trophies to be hunted in the wild, and as monsters of forests and seas. Their presence is ubiquitous and their pervasive influence is felt in nearly all aspects of human life. This course aims to investigate human-animal relationships with a focus on the US American context and promote reflection of everyday cultural practices and their impact on nonhuman lives.
